EU Leaders Gather in Copenhagen to Tackle Urgent Challenges

(MENAFN) EU heads of state gathered in Copenhagen Wednesday to confront urgent challenges surrounding defense enhancement, Ukraine’s security, and sanctions enforcement against Russia.

Discussions zero in on strengthening Europe's military framework, utilizing frozen Russian funds to support Ukraine, and advancing Kyiv’s contentious bid for EU membership.

Security for the summit is unprecedented. Danish outlets report that the measures in place are the most extensive since the 2009 United Nations Climate Change Conference.

Fortifying Europe’s Defense
At the forefront is a drive to boost Europe’s defense capabilities. Among the proposals is the creation of a “drone wall” along the EU’s eastern border, coupled with new strategies to reinforce collective defense. Leaders face a critical decision: Should these initiatives be centrally managed by the European Commission or delegated to individual member states?

Unlocking Frozen Russian Assets for Ukraine
Support for Ukraine remains a focal point. The European Commission has suggested releasing sanctioned Russian assets to fund a €140 billion ($164 billion) “reparations loan” to Kyiv.

The scheme envisions an interest-free loan that Ukraine would repay once reparations are finalized post-conflict.

However, the plan faces notable opposition. Hungary and Slovakia are expected to resist, while Belgium has voiced concerns due to the significant portion of frozen Russian funds residing in its banking system.

Stalled EU Membership Talks
Ukraine’s application to join the EU remains a thorny issue. Accession demands unanimous consent from all 27 member states, but Hungary’s repeated objections continue to impede progress.

Sanctions Debate and Hungary’s Role
The latest EU sanctions package targeting Russian financial institutions and energy firms also comes under scrutiny. Once again, Hungary’s hesitancy could obstruct consensus.

Broader European Political Community Summit Ahead
Denmark will host the European Political Community (EPC) summit Thursday, aiming to foster cooperation beyond the EU’s core 27 nations.

Initiated in 2022 following a proposal by French President Emmanuel Macron, the EPC convenes European countries to coordinate on key matters including security, energy, infrastructure, and migration.

This summit underscores Europe’s urgent push to address security and geopolitical stability amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
