Macron Urges Europe to Take Charge of Its Own Security

(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday called for a more “audacious” and self-assured Europe, stressing that the continent must shape its own security framework rather than allow external powers to dictate it.

Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Macron warned that Europe stands at a historic crossroads, influenced by the war in Ukraine, changing transatlantic relations, and a more volatile global environment.

“This is the right time for audacity. This is the right time for a strong Europe,” he said.

Macron emphasized that the European Union must “learn to become a geopolitical power,” arguing that relying solely on economic influence is no longer sufficient while security decisions are determined elsewhere.

“Our geography will not change,” he said, referring to Russia. “We will live with Russia at the same place… and I don’t want this negotiation to be organized by somebody else.”

While supporting US-led diplomatic efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict, Macron underscored that Europe must be central to any peace process. “No peace without the Europeans,” he said.

“You can negotiate without Europeans if you prefer, but it will not bring peace to the table.”

He described Russia as “a weakened country” whose invasion of Ukraine had resulted in “a strategic, an economic and even a military failure,” dismissing claims that Kyiv has already lost the war as “a huge strategic mistake.”
