France Set to Pour USD39B Into Its Military by 2030
The proposal, presented by Minister of the Armed Forces and Veterans Catherine Vautrin, outlines a sweeping overhaul of the nation's multi-year defense program — formally designated LPM 2024-2030 — with funding set to climb to 57.1 billion euros ($62 billion) in 2026 before reaching 76.3 billion euros ($83 billion) by the decade's close.
"Our armed forces are capable of facing a major engagement at an uncertain time horizon," said Catherine Vautrin, minister of the armed forces and veterans, adding that the update aims to strengthen both operational readiness and national sovereignty.
The revised program spans the full spectrum of modern warfare, channeling investment into equipment, munitions, drone capabilities, and operational reserves, while extending upgraded capacity across land, sea, air, space, and cyber domains. France's nuclear deterrent and conventional forces will also be preserved under the framework.
Among the plan's headline targets is a near-doubling of the operational reserve, which is projected to reach 50,000 personnel by 2030 — augmenting a standing force of 275,000 active service members.
Vautrin further emphasized that the program is designed to condition troops for combat in extreme environments, while cementing France's industrial and technological self-reliance — a priority increasingly echoed across European capitals amid mounting uncertainty over the continent's long-term security architecture.
