UNC Deputy Commander Highlights Germany’s Reaccession and Shared Security Interests During Berlin Visit

BERLIN, Germany —Deputy Commander United Nations Command (UNC) Lieutenant General Scott Winter visited Berlin, Germany, to highlight Germany’s reaccession to UNC (2024) and reinforce the enduring relevance of the multinational command in addressing security challenges in the region.

LTGEN Winter’s visit emphasized UNC’s role as a platform for multinational cooperation, building on Germany’s renewed participation to advance shared security interests and support lasting peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.

During his visit, LTGEN Winter participated in a series of engagements with German and international defense and diplomatic leaders with discussions focused on the growing nexus between the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) and Russia, the importance of multilateral deterrence, and the need for sustained international engagement to address shared security challenges.

“These engagements underscored the value of close coordination among UNC member states and partners in responding to developments that connect European and Indo-Pacific security,” Winter said.

LTGEN Winter also participated in a roundtable discussion hosted by the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP), bringing together academics and policy experts from DGAP and the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP), alongside industry representatives.

“The robust discussion examined the evolving strategic environment on the Korean Peninsula within the broader Indo-Pacific context, including the implications of DPRK-Russia cooperation.

“The exchange provided an opportunity to consider how research, policy expertise and industry perspectives can contribute to a shared understanding of emerging security challenges and continue engagement among like-minded partners.”
